Restoring Learning During School Closures

Hello Samuel Hearne MS Community,

I hope that you are doing well and are keeping in a safe environment with those closest to you as we face an extraordinary situation that is affecting each of us in different ways.

As we know, we are currently facing an unprecedented situation where the concern of our school and of the TDSB continues to be the health and well-being of all students, staff and their families amidst the COVID-19 pandemic. During this time, we would like for you to know that the staff of our school is thinking of and wishes the continued health and safety of all Samuel Hearne MS students and families.

We remind our School Community to stay safe by following all protocols and directives outlined by Toronto Public Health, Ontario Ministry of Health and government officials (such as social distancing) to ensure your health and safety, as well as the health and safety of others.

We also know that student mental health and well-being are important areas of focus. Both school-based staff and Professional Support Services share responsibilities for supporting student well-being. There are a variety of Mental Health and Well-Being Resources for students and families available on the TDSB website.

I am sharing this blog post to connect with you to share pertinent information and resources to support our students and School Community during this time – please see the sections below for further details:

A. Restoring Teaching & Learning In The TDSB:

You have likely spent some time reflecting on the impact our current situation is having on us all, and I know you have a lot of questions about how educators will be supporting students in their learning during the provincial school closure. What we know from the Ontario government is that schools WILL NOT re-open on Monday, April 6, 2020. When we have more information on new timelines, we will share that with you.

To support student well-being and learning at home in the 2 weeks ahead, please see the links below for resources currently shared by the Ontario Ministry of Education, the TDSB and Samuel Hearne MS:

In addition to the resources and information shared above, through the balance of this week and into the week of Monday, March 30, 2020 (2 week period), the goal of the TDSB and our school is to set our system up for success, focusing on restoring teaching and learning. In this 2 week planning stage, TDSB staff are gathering information, assessing needs, formulating plans to establish the delivery of curriculum and are exploring ways to provide students with access to the supports they need to stay well and learn.

Please be sure to read the most recent letter (sent on Wednesday, March 25, 2020) to parents/guardians from TDSB Director of Education, Dr. John Malloy. As more information regarding this planning and related next steps becomes available, we will be sure to share this with our School Community.
