School Community Check-In/Update

Good Afternoon Samuel Hearne MS Community,

On behalf of the Staff of Samuel Hearne Middle School, we sincerely hope that our Students and Families are continuing to be safe and are well.

This week, we move forward with Week 11 of remote learning. With this, I see how hard Students and Parents/Guardians are continuing to work to adjust to constantly changing times and new norms. I thank you for your efforts related to this.

As we look ahead to the end of the 2019/2020 school year, this School Community Check-In/Update contains important year end information.

Please see the sections below for our latest School Community Check-In and Update:

TERM 2 REPORT CARD & IEP INFORMATION

In addition to information previously shared in past School Community Check-Ins/Updates, please see the information below with regards to 2019/2020 Term 2 Report Cards and IEPs.

Due to school closures, the distribution of Term 2 Report Cards and IEPs (for those Students with IEPs) will look different this June 2020. Please see the “Report Cards” section within the letter sent to TDSB Parents/Guardians from the TDSB Director of Education (Dr. John Malloy), as well as the details below:

  • Term 2 Report Card Information/Timelines:
    • As it is not possible to distribute hard copies of Term 2 Report Cards in school as we typically do, Term 2 Report Cards will be electronically distributed via email to the email address our school has on file for a Parent/Guardian:
      • Term 2 Report Cards for Students in Grade 5 – Grade 8 will be electronically distributed via email between Monday, June 22, 2020 and Friday, June 26, 2020
      • For Parents/Guardians with no email address on file, a Term 2 Report Card hardcopy will be mailed to the home address our school has on file
  • Term 2 IEP Information/Timelines:
    • Similarly, as it is not possible to distribute hardcopies of IEPs (for those Students with IEPs) as we typically do (ideally all IEPs would be sent home to families with Term 2 Report Cards in June), a two-page IEP Summary will be electronically distributed via email to the email address our school has on file for a Parent/Guardian:
      • Two-page IEP Summaries will be electronically distributed via email (for those Students with IEPs) between Monday, June 22, 2020 and Friday, June 26, 2020
      • For Parents/Guardians with no email address on file, two-page IEP Summary hardcopies (for those Students with IEPs) will be mailed to the home address our school has on file
      • Parents/Guardians may request the full IEP of those Students with IEPs – please contact Mr. Romano directly with this request via email at: Joseph.Romano@tdsb.on.ca

TDSB SECONDARY PROGRAM REVIEW INTERIM REPORT

Please see below for a message from the TDSB regarding the Secondary Program Review:

The Interim Report of the Secondary Program Review was presented to Trustees last month, a first step in the development of a plan to address the inequities and imbalances throughout our current system. This report supports our next step forward as we start to re-imagine and re-draw our system in consolation and collaboration with our communities to enhance equity and support the achievement and well-being of each and every student in the TDSB, now and in the future.

We want to hear from you! Any recommendations made through this process will have an impact on current elementary students, as young as Grade 1. Our plan, if approved by Trustees in the fall, will create the roadmap for changes to our secondary schools and programs over the next 8 to 10 years.

No specific schools have been named for consolidation and no further steps will be taken without extensive local community consultation. Over the next four months, students, parents, staff and community members can continue to provide feedback and further insight through delegations and their local Trustee, by email to secondaryreview@tdsb.on.ca or on our online form. The Secondary Program Review Final Report will be presented to the Board in October 2020.
