School Community Check-In/Update & 2019/2020 Academic Year End

Good Morning Samuel Hearne MS Community,

On behalf of the Staff of Samuel Hearne Middle School, we sincerely hope that our Students and Families are continuing to be safe and are well.

As we look ahead to the end of the 2019/2020 academic year, this School Community Check-In/Update contains important year end information.

Please see the sections below for our latest School Community Check-In and Update:

YEAR END MESSAGE FROM MR. ROMANO:

The 2019/2020 academic year has indeed been one like no other. As a School Community, district, and society, we have had to adapt to a continuously changing reality based on a number of factors, all while we continue to ensure the health, safety and well-being of our Students, Parents/Guardians and Staff.

On behalf of the Staff of Samuel Hearne Middle School, we would like to thank our Students and Parents/Guardians for a very successful year where we have adapted to new realities (such as Remote Learning) as well as for the continued resilience, collaboration and understanding during these unprecedented times.

As we look back upon this past academic year, amidst the impact the COVID-19 pandemic has had on society at large (including our School Community), we cannot forget the number of rich experiences our Students, Staff and School Community have shared. These experiences highlight our work together in achieving academic, social and co-curricular success, experiences we hope develop into lasting memories as we continue to move forward. To view some of these experiences and memories, please visit our #HearneLearns hashtag on Twitter, and please see our Staff Messages To Students video shared earlier during Remote Learning:

As our Students move forward in the direction of achieving their goals, we ask our Students to consider what they have learned during this academic year and what new learning awaits in September 2020. While at this time we are not entirely certain as to how school, teaching and learning will look in September/during the 2020/2021 academic year, we remind our Students to always remember and value the hard work, dedication and time it took to get to this stage, and we ask our Students to never forget and appreciate the support of Samuel Hearne Staff, Families and our School Community in reaching their full potential during these challenging times and beyond.

On behalf of the Staff of Samuel Hearne Middle School, we would like to wish all Students, Families and our School Community a successful year end and a safe, restful and fun Summer Break!

TDSB SUMMER WELL-BEING GUIDE:

Screen Shot 2020-06-20 at 2.13.03 PM

  • With Summer around the corner, we know that this Summer Break will look different than any other that we have experienced, this may leave us all wondering what Students can safely do during July and August:
    • What can we do to support Student well-being, by keeping Students active, healthy and happy?
  • It will be a challenge for many of us as our usual Summer activities may be cancelled, and the annual events that we look forward to every year may be missing
  • To support and share ideas, please see the TDSB Summer Well-Being Guide below:
SUN SAFE BEHAVIOUR:
  • This Spring and Summer, the TDSB and Toronto Public Health would like Students to be safe while playing outdoors
  • As we continue to navigate the COVID-19 pandemic, please follow all guidelines from Toronto Public Health, including physical distancing protocols
  • Getting Students outside and active is good for their health, but too much sun can have serious side-effects, including burns, eye damage, premature aging of the skin and skin cancer – we encourage all Students to practice sun safety
  • What exactly does Sun Safe Behaviour look like?:
    • Cover Up:
Even on days with a moderate UV index, Students should wear a hat and sunglasses, especially if they will be outside for over 30 minutes
    • Stay Cool:
Students should stay in shady areas, particularly at midday when the sun is strongest
    • Use Sunscreen:
Choose sunscreens with SPF 15 or higher that include protection from both UVA and UVB rays
