On behalf of the Staff of Samuel Hearne Middle School, we would like to thank our Students and Families for your ongoing understanding and support as we continue to work together to ensure the health and safety of all in our School Community.

A. Overview:

  • We remind our School Community to review the information on our School Website, as well as to continue to visit the TDSB Website for further details, resources and information

B. NEW – Winter Break & TPH Guidance For The Holiday Season:

  • From Monday, December 21, 2020 to Friday, January 1, 2021 (inclusive), all TDSB Schools will be on Winter Break, when Schools will be closed
  • As a reminder, the last day of school before the Winter Break is Friday, December 18, 2020 and school resumes on Monday, January 4, 2021
  • Further, families are advised to review Toronto Public Health’s “Guidance For the Holiday Season” document

C. NEW – TDSB 2020/2021 Severe Weather Procedure:

  • With the colder weather upon us, and the likelihood of severe weather conditions, the TDSB would like to take this opportunity to review the TDSB Severe Weather Procedure with schools and families
  • Parents/Guardians are advised to review the TDSB “2020/2021 Severe Weather Procedure” letter, as shared on the TDSB website by clicking/taping HERE

D. REMINDER – Revised Daily Health Screening Guidelines:


  • As you are aware, information regarding important revisions to our Daily Health Screening Guidelines have been shared with Parents/Guardians
  • Please read the latest TDSB update regarding Revised Daily Health Screening Guidelines on the TDSB Website, shared with Parents/Guardians via email last week
  • Toronto Public Health announced on Friday, December 4, 2020 that it has updated its COVID-19 Student Screening Tool to prevent further opportunities for virus spread
  • In line with this, TPH has revised their guidance for Students and related Daily Health Screening materials
  • As part of this guidance, if a child has one or more new, or worsening COVID-19 symptoms (please see the images/links below), parents will now be required to:
    • Keep their child home
    • Keep siblings and other children home, even if they do not have symptoms
    • Arrange for the child to get tested or contact their health care provider
    • Without testing, the child must stay home for 10 days
    • Monitor the family for symptoms – Adults must stay home if they have one or more symptom
  • The TDSB takes its lead from Toronto Public Health and has begun using this new screening guidance as of Monday, December 7, 2020

  • The health, safety and well-being of Staff and Students is our top priority:

F. REMINDER – Students Who Exhibit Symptoms Of COVID-19:

  • For Students who exhibit symptoms of COVID-19, or confirm that they have symptoms, will go to our Wellness Room (Health Room)
  • Parents/Guardians will be contacted and will need to come to the School to pick-up their Child

G. REMINDER – Grade 8 To Grade 9 High School Transition Information:

  • A smooth transition from Grade 8 to Grade 9 contributes to a strong foundation for success in Secondary School and beyond
  • Grade 8 is a time for Students to look to the future and to think about their selection of courses for Grade 9 and throughout High School
  • As shared with the Parents/Guardians of Grade 8 Students on Wednesday, November 4, 2020 by the TDSB, to support Student planning for a successful transition from Elementary to Secondary School, the information and links below will assist Grade 8 Students and Families as you navigate the transition to High School – please review the following in detail:

  • Please be reminded to carefully review the TDSB Optional Attendance webpage for full details regarding the Optional Attendance process
  • Please see below for the TDSB Secondary Optional Attendance Key Dates:
    • Friday, January 29, 2021:
      • Optional attendance forms due at secondary school
    • Friday, February 12, 2021:
      • Deadline for Parents/Guardians to be informed of the status of the application request
    • Friday, February 26, 2021:
      • Course selection sheets due at elementary schools (Student’s Responsibility)
    • Monday, March 1, 2021:
      • Course selection sheets due at secondary schools via myBlueprint
  • With this, please see below for our school-specific Optional Attendance Key Dates:
    • Monday, January 11, 2021 – Thursday, January 14, 2021:
      • Optional Attendance Form drop-off (by Students or Parents/Guardians) to Samuel Hearne MS Main Office
    • Monday, January 18, 2021 & Tuesday, January 19, 2021:
      • Optional Attendance Form pick-up (by Students or Parents/Guardians) from Samuel Hearne MS Main Office
  • Please Note:
    • We understand that some TDSB secondary schools require the Optional Attendance Form before the Friday, January 29, 2021 due date
    • If this is the case regarding your child’s secondary school application, please contact the Samuel Hearne MS Main Office directly at (416) 396 6555 to make arrangements
    • As noted on the Optional Attendance Form, it is the Parent/Guardian’s responsibility to deliver this application (including the Optional Attendance Form) to the secondary school or schools of choice   
  • Should Parents/Guardians have any questions regarding the Grade 8 To Grade 9 High School Transition, please contact our school Main Office at (416) 396 6555

H. REMINDER – Student Lates & Absences:

  • One measure of keeping our Students safe is to ensure we can account for any absences or reasons for being late to school
  • We would like to remind you that if your child is going to be absent or late for any reason, we ask that you contact the school immediately via telephone at (416) 396 6555 and report the reason for the absence
  • If we are not informed about the absence, we will make attempts to contact you through our automated call-out system to determine the reason for the absence

  • Please let our Main Office know by calling our school at (416) 396 6555 if your contact information, including phone number, changes at any time throughout the school year
